Repairing

the Broken Bowl©

Repairing the Broken Bowl is a daylong workshop based on the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi and the ancient practice of kintsugi.

These approaches treat the cycle of breakage and repair as a part of an object's history rather than something to be discarded or disguised.

The maker must move through a process of confronting change, accepting change, and deciding how to move forward with what is left. Join us for this insightful experience where you will have the opportunity to decorate and repair a broken bowl (which will be provided to you) and how to make meaning out of brokenness. Be mindful that this process is likely to bring up strong emotions surrounding loss and care is taken to preserve the safety of the group.

Traditional day long workshops are offered at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro.

For therapists looking for continuing education credits, Bridget offers workshops on Repairing the Broken Bowl with additional information on the therapeutic applications of this process.

Recently, I have adapted this workshop to accommodate groups who want to learn about the process of Kintsugi and the art of repair in a shorter workshop. In this modified workshop, we repair small tiles instead of bowls. Participants still have the opportunity to experience the joy and creativity inspired by Repairing the Broken Bowl with a smaller time committment. This shorter workshop is appropriate for workplaces or smaller retreats and conference. This shorter format is also a good option for people who want to ecperience the art of repair online.
